What equipment do I need to set up photography strobes?

I want to set up a mini studio that I can collapse and store and bring out as needed.

I want to take portraits to include full body shots. I have the backdrop. The cameras I currently have are: Canon DRebel and the Canon Elan 7 (film). I’d like to get a set up but just don’t know what to buy.

A quick and dirty list of what is needed. I don’t quite understand the lingo about “hot shoe” and “slave” and things of that nature since I’ve always done landscape photos without flash. So all help is appreciated. Thanks.
Thank you, but that's really expensive to start out with. Looking for something budget friendly. Would something like this work?

    Here’s my list:
    - pair of strobes with modeling lamps (I like Alienbees for the value, they have student discounts: http://www.alienbees.com/packages.html)
    - stands for the strobes
    - softboxes (vs. umbrellas)…can be bought from Alienbees too.

    Extras:
    - additional strobe for lighting your backdrop, or to be used as a hairlight.

The Alienbees are optically triggered, so you only need a flash cable (included with alienbees) from your camera to one alienbee (the master) . The other alienbee will detect the light from the first one and fire simultaneously (this is the slave.)

Another possibility is to just rent a kit from the local photography store.

Look at the portable Novatron Lighting systems.

Not a bad lighting kit for the price, but you will want to use 500 Watt bulbs
