Rebel XSI: What starting lens should I buy? Please help!?
Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009I plan to buy a Canon Rebel XSI 12.2 DSLR very soon and need some tips on what Lens’s i should buy first.
Right now I am a novice/intermediate photographer getting my first SLR. I have camera experience on the cinema side of things, so I am not completely lost.
Basically I plan to shoot all types of pictures. Especially landscapes, nature and sports/action pictures. But I definetly intend on doing a bit of macro and portraits as well. What would be the best lens or lenses to buy right off the bat.
Basically I have about a 0 budget to get all I need, including the camera. I found the XSI w/ kit lens for 550 brand new. I can decide whether I should buy that and spend the rest of budget on a lens or if i should buy JUST the body and get a upgraded version of the 18-55mm (such as the Sigma 17-70mm or Tamron 17-50mm.
Here are a few ideas I had. Which do you guys think would set me off on my new hobby the most prepared:
1) Buy XSI with kit lens, then buy 55-250mm IS from canon
2) XSI with kit, then another lens (suggestions?)
3) Buy XSI Body only, then spend the remaining on either an upgraded all around lens (sigma 17-70mm or Tamron 17-50mm), or two cheaper lenses.
4) XSI Body Only w/ a higher quality, specialized lens like a prime, macro or something
5) Suggestions?
As you can see, my mind is racing in many different directions on what I should do. And I cant for the life of me figure out what would be the better plan.
I would also prefer to have lenses that are versatile enough that when many years down the line I decide to upgrade my body, that my lenses are still usable.
Thus far I am leaning towards the first option. Mainly because I would love to be able to have 2 lenses right off the bat that cover a wide range of Focal Length. What is the quality difference between the 18-55 kit lens and the Sigma 17-70mm? Would I be better off get body only and instead of the kit lens buy the sigma? I just dont know.. Too many choices.
Please help
Just found this package deal on Amazon. Any good? Though I heard the 70-300mm lens leaves quite a bit to be desired. But this deal comes with alot of bonus stuff (which i am sure is of questionable quality).

Whats a better SLR Camera for my situation? Cannon Rebel XSI 12.2 or Pantex k2000?
Wednesday, November 25th, 2009I am in my late twenties and starting to really get into photography. I plan to buy a DSLR sometime by christmas and dont know which would be best for my situation. Basically I am a novice-intermediate photographer (well more of a cinematography making my way to photography) and need a good all around camera.
I know I cant go wrong with either one, but I am sure one is a little better then the other in terms of what I am looking for. Ive done a lot of research on this so I have a good understanding of the two cameras and what they excel at. But experience is a different matter, and I have none regarding these two cameras.
I plan to use the camera for general purposes. Mostly I plan on shooting Landscapes and Sports pictures. I coach a Pop Warner football team so Id like to be able to take some good pictures of the players during games and what not as well.
What do you guys think? Im leaning towards the XSI simply because I hear its much better at sports/action photos as well as low light situations then the Pantex k2000. And honestly, I might be in the minority here, but Id much rather have a battery pack then have to scrounge around for AA batteries. Just seems easier.
Please help me fellow artists and photographers.. Thanks..
What Ive learned thus far…
Pantex
+ A bit more durable and better weather guarding (Great for bad weather, but how often will i be taking pics in a blizzard?)
+ All Pantex lenses fit on the camera, which is great since they have a bunch of good lenses.
+ Pretty good all around camera
+ Anti-Shake built into the camera
- AA batteries instead of a recharge like in a cell phone or laptop
- Not a great camera in low light situations
- Paying for the flash which i really dont need
- Not a good camera for Sports or Action shots (which i plan on taking alot of. Yankee games, sport games etc)
Cannon
+ Better in low light situations
+ More pixels and higher resolution then the Pantex. Also has better Focusing.
+ Top end camera for Sport or Action shots
- Camera doesnt have Anti-Shake, but the lenses do. Which means I have to spend a bit more money on future lenses making sure they have Anti-Shake.
All for the Canon huh? It was definetly what I was leaning towards. But I hear it feels like a toy. Any thoughts on that?
And sorry Sergeant Spell Checker… PENTEX and CANON…
Which Digital SLR camera?
Monday, September 28th, 2009I have been getting a bit more serious into photography, and lately I have been trying to decide if a DSLR is for me. I have never used a DSLR until just recently a friend of mine finally got one and let me play around with it a bit and showed me a few things. After that I knew I wanted one. I started to look into it more and learned a bit more of the ins and outs.
I know that there is no such thing as the "best DSLR" it’s more based around what your using it for. The problem I’m having is that the more and more I look into it I see that I do a lot of stuff with mine.
First off I need a camera with a decent number of Megapixels due to my photo editing needs and large printing needs.
Second, I need a camera that that has low noise at high ISO levels due to me using it in tons of different light settings.
Third, I realize that a majority of my photos are outdoors and I would need to have some sort of camera that cleans the digital sensor just in case.
Four, I never use a tripod. I’m always on the go with my camera and I do have shaky hands and would like it to have an Image Stabilization of some sort.
Five, would like it to have a large number of Auto focus point systems.
Basically I sat down and figured my basic uses for this camera are:
Landscapes,
Close up Pictures (like rain drops)
Night/ Low and Odd light conditions
Outdoors
Spontaneous Photos
Some Planned and Staged Photos and Portraits
I know to get a lot of these features it would cost a lot of money, which me for a novice at DSLRs can eventually get with time and more money. I realize that to capture many of these different shots I will need different lenses and so forth and realize that it can add up quite fast.
So I am asking you guys, what do you think is a good starting camera and gear that I can start with and add on to as I progress? I sort of prefer Canon and Nikon but will consider other suggestions if you can tell me why would I chose them over those two. I have been looking at the Canon and Nikon websites at them as so far I really like the Nikon D5000 and the Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i EF-S. Does anyone have any experience with these cameras or uses them and tell me what they think and what other lenses would you recommend for my needs?
Thanks! Will give points for best answers!
Also size doesn’t matter to me, I know I said I go everywhere with my camera and I will with this one to, but I don’t really care how heavy it is.

Also just wanted to add that size doesn’t matter. I know I said that I go everywhere with my camera and this one I will to, but I honestly don’t care how heavy it is, any size is fine.
Best way to sell art?
Monday, August 31st, 2009I can’t not work anymore because I have my grandparents to take care of. They are 90 years old. Therefore I have to find a way to make money at home. I have always painted a little and the last couple of years I have been into One Stroke Decorative Painting by Donna Dewberry. I paint vases, dishes, wooden objects, flower pots,…anything I can get my hands on. When I worked, I would decorate my desk and coworkers would ask me to paint for them. I sold some that way. But now that I don’t work I need a new way to get my work ‘noticed’. I found a local store that I paid a small rent to in exchange for shelf space. I did sell my work, however the store wasn’t busy enough to keep paying the rent. So that didn’t work. I have thought about flea markets, maybe creating a website….Anyone have another idea? I can also paint landscapes in oil and acrylic, however I am a novice in that area. I excel in decorative painting.
between a Nikon and a Cannon which should i get?
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009im a novice at this. and this would be my first DSLR camera. i have no particular specialty in photography, like sports or landscape or portrait.. im thinking of trying every field, then maybe i’ll know what i’ll want to be doing more of. i’m planning to get the D80 or the 40D which is better? they say The 40D is cannon’s equivalent to Nikon’s D80.. so which should i get?.. i want a camera that i can grow in to not one that i can grow out off.
im in need of your help!.. thanks guys
What lenses should I get with my Canon Rebel XTi?
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009I'm considering buying a Canon Rebel XTi.
I've heard that the simple lens that comes with the camera isn't all that great. I'm not a novice in photography, but I'm not a pro either (thus the reason I'm asking). I like to take pictures of up close things (Flowers, plants, etc.) and I enjoy taking pictures of landscapes, fields, streams, creeks.
What lenses should I look into buying… that are not only good quallity, but are SOMEWHAT on the cheaper side?
I'm not looking to be a professional photographer… but I just want my pictures to look great.

Need DSLR…what should I look for?
Wednesday, May 13th, 2009Hi. I'm in the market for a good DSLR. I want to get just a starter Digital SLR; nothing real expensive, just manageable and takes awesome pictures. I will be going to a wedding in December in Hawaii and I really want to be able to take awesome pics. In addition, I want to be able to use it on landscapes and certain models. I have an affinity with photography and I'm only a novice photographer. I have been told that I have a good eye with taking pictures (I've been using my Panasonic Linux for a LONG time…it's really old. LOL!) and I think I should get the ball rolling.
If anyone could please help me choose a good camera, that would be just AWESOME! ^_^
Thanks very much!
